Membership

Membership is open to all regional associations representing Africa-based pharmaceutical manufacturers in Africa. Members must be committed to the provision of quality, safe and efficacious medicines in Africa.

FAPMA delivers a range of benefits to its members – both the regional associations and individual pharmaceutical companies. It aims to represent, support and develop the common interests of its members in the pharmaceutical industry in Africa.

FAPMA focuses on two main areas of support for its members: (i) Investment and Funding; and (ii) Market Access.

The objective of the Federation shall be to represent, support and develop the common scientific and technical interests of its members in the pharmaceutical industry in Africa. The Federation’s interests as referred to above shall not be restricted to the African continent but shall include relations globally.

FAPMA

Objectives

1. Promoting interchange, contact and cooperation within the pharmaceutical industry and among other stakeholders in Africa and globally.

2. Monitoring, studying, and analysing issues of common interest impacting the pharmaceutical industry in Africa and globally.

3. Developing, coordinating and implementing common positions.

4. Organising, encouraging and supporting public fora for information dissemination, exchange and policy dialogue on issues impacting the pharmaceutical industry in Africa and globally.

5. Supporting and making known the needs of the pharmaceutical industry in Africa and, as far as practical, coordinating the means whereby those needs may be met or addressed.

6. Supporting African and international authorities and bodies regarding common interests concerning the pharmaceutical industry, and participating in the global discourse on health issues and giving the continent of Africa a voice in the international health arena.

7. Cooperating with national associations of pharmaceutical manufacturers in Africa.

8. Encouraging the formation of pharmaceutical manufacturing associations in the different African regions and countries where they do not exist yet.

9. Promoting, fostering and maintaining contacts with African or global institutions representing interests relevant to the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

FAPMA

Activities

Since its inception, FAPMA has been involved in various advocacy activities that have helped shape the pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. Key activities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Stakeholder consultations, representing the private sector who are involved in the formulation of the Business Plan for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa (PMPA).
  • Implementation of the PMPA at national, regional, and continental levels.
  • Promotion of local production.
  • Support of Africa Medicines Regulatory Harmonization (AMRH) programs representing the private sector.
  • Engagements with the Global Fund, UNICEF, and PEPFAR to increase procurement from African pharmaceutical manufacturers, resulting in the signing of a GF/FAPMA Road Map for the procurement of essential non-pandemic medicines from African pharmaceutical manufacturers.
  • Advocacy for accessible funding for Africa pharmaceutical companies.
  • WHO’s GMP Road Map programs at National and Regional levels through its associations.
  • Pharmaceutical Sector Development Strategies at National and Regional levels through African Medicines Agency business plans, representing the private sector.
  • Proud host of the inaugural AMMTEC conference in Tanzania in 2024, a conference by our industry for our industry. The AMMTEC conference will be held annually to support and accelerate the growth of the medicines manufacturing industry in Africa and will provide a unique opportunity for FAPMA to promote and address the interests of our members.
