Who we are

The Federation of African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations (FAPMA) is a continental organization of Africa-based manufacturers committed to developing the industry to meet Africa’s need for affordable quality medicines.

The founding directors for FAPMA were Dr Paul Lartey, Mr Nazeem Mohammed and Dr Skhumbuzo Ngozwana, who instigated the idea of FAPMA in their capacity as regional chairs of the respective pharmaceutical manufacturing associations. FAPMA had its first meeting and official launch in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 25 January 2013. Dr Paul Lartey was elected as the Chairperson of the Federation. At this meeting, 3 regional associations were represented – the Federation of East African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (FEAPMA), Southern African Generic Medicines Association (SAGMA) and West African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (WAPMA).

FAPMA is the voice and facilitator of the African pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, supporting its members in investment and funding, as well as market access. Today, FAPMA represents the voice of over 700 African pharmaceutical companies.

The Federation specifically seeks to:

  • Promote access to safe, quality efficacious medicines in Africa;
  • Facilitate economic growth and development of a sustainable, self-sufficient and viable pharmaceutical industry in Africa;
  • Strengthen the local production of medicines in Africa; and
  • Act as an industry coordinating body by promoting excellence, facilitating networking opportunities, disseminating information and raising awareness regarding matters relating to the pharmaceutical industry.

To foster a vibrant and self-sustaining pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Africa by providing quality and affordable medicines, so as to contribute to the reduction of disease burden and promote economic development of the continent.

To facilitate collaboration between regional pharmaceutical manufacturing associations to address the common challenges faced by the industry and enhance opportunities towards self-sufficiency.

To foster a vibrant and self-sustaining pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Africa by providing quality and affordable medicines, so as to contribute to the reduction of disease burden and promote economic development of the continent.

To facilitate collaboration between regional pharmaceutical manufacturing associations to address the common challenges faced by the industry and enhance opportunities towards self-sufficiency.
